This section is dedicated to the artisans and vendors who fill this special place with culture and beauty.
When I first arrived to Sacramento, alone. I was in search of a sense of home, a place that could fill the void left by the home I had left behind.
I was struggling to find that work evironment that I felt comfortable in. My roommate at the moment, had mentioned a placita that I would love so she took me.
Once there, I immediately fell in love with the place and felt like it was welcoming me with its arms wide open. Later on in the semester we had a portrait assignment and I chose to go back to the placita with my friend Yancey to ask the vendors for portraits. After a few portraits and good talks with the vendors, I was asked by the owner of the front store, David, if I was in search of a job. I immediately said yes. I left my information and later got called by his wife, Nancy, who hired me in the moment. I couldn’t believe that I had found the home and environment I was missing so much. It was like as if I had been working there for a while now. Since the very first day, the workers embraced me with open arms despite my status as an outsider. I always like to say that I didn’t find the Placita, the Placita had found me.
This is a tribute to the people I’ve had the privilege of working alongside. It’s a collection of their stories, told in their own words, as a way to celebrate the diverse tapestry of lives that make up this special place. I hope to offer readers a glimpse into the world of the placita, to introduce them to the artisans and artists who transform humble materials into art, to the vendors who infuse the air with the scents of culture and tradition.
